In order to make the perfect homemade tomato sauce, you need to know how to peel tomatoes. If you don’t peel the tomatoes, you’re left with bits and pieces of the skin that completely change the final texture. It may seem like a tedious (and messy) task, but with the right technique it’s unbelievably easy. Before you start, you’ll want to get a pot of water boiling on the stove.
1. SLICE AN “X”
Slice an “x” shape into the underside of the tomatoes. You don’t need to cut deep into the flesh of the tomato, simply score the skin.
2. PLACE THE TOMATOES IN BOILING WATER
Place the tomatoes in a pot of boiling water for 60 seconds. When time’s up, remove them from the water with a slotted spoon.
3. PEEL OFF THE SKIN
Peel off the skin of the tomato by simply pulling on the corners created by the “x”. The skin will peel off easily. Be careful as the tomatoes may still be hot. If you’d like, you can place your tomatoes in a bowl of ice water to quickly cool them down.
4. YOU’RE DONE
Use your tomatoes to make a delicious homemade pasta sauce or tomato soup!
