Our team put the heatless curls to the test with The Sleep Styler! Read on to see how it went.
I have long, thick and frizzy hair. Nothing ever seems to tame my natural hair texture. As a result, I depend on my hair straightener to fry my hair smooth. While I still love the sleek and shiny look hot tools provide – I typically use my flat iron to straighten and curl my hair. Lately, I have noticed the negative effects start to show. Not to mention my hair takes far too long to style with traditional hot tools (cough…I’m lazy) so my styling routine usually consists of a messy bun.
After years and years of testing hair creams, serums and at-home straightening treatments with negligible results, I won’t believe anything the package tells me. For those who are wondering, I have found two products which do seem to tone down the frizz a bit: DevaCurl Styling Cream and Joico K-Pak Reconstructor. But these high-end products are not exactly in my “everyday products” budget, so I use them on days when I have a meeting or on date nights…or whenever I remember they are stashed in my drawer. The average hair product just doesn’t cut it with my mane. When I stumbled across The Sleep Styler, I took notice.
Testing The Sleep Styler
The first time I tested out The Sleep Styler, I anxiously washed my hair like normal, allowed it to air dry to 80% (this is recommended for thick hair), rolled up my hair as instructed and went to sleep. The rollers are really comfortable!! The memory foam rollers are more comfortable than my actual pillow and they do not pull or tug on the scalp. Win-win!
I woke up and only one roller in the back had untwisted itself overnight. Which is a miracle because I am a wild sleeper. There were a few areas that were kinked near my roots due to user error. Come to think of it, that is the exact reason why I really liked The Sleep Styler. It is much easier to envision how the curls will fall out than my usual method of curling. If you notice your hair has a strange bend in it, rewrap it until it lays how you want it to look.
The second time I tried out The Sleep Styler I wore it during the day while working from home. One of the many reasons I love my job! This time I was a little more careful in my method. I deep conditioned my hair, washed and toweled it down before applying my DevaCurl product. You can use all your usual products with the Sleep Styler because you can remove the fabric part of the rollers and pop them in the wash. No need to worry about product buildup over time.
Once air dried to 80%, I then divided my hair in half down the middle, sectioned it and wrapped my strands up. This time I used bobby pins to secure the face framing layers back to achieve a smooth “blow-out” look. It is easy to envision how to position them to achieve this look. I simply held them in place and secured the strap to the base of my hair at the scalp in a victory-roll-fashion.
I waited two or three hours, got ready for my dinner plans and released the curls. My excitement got the better of me, as my hair was still ever-so-damp still. Really test your patience and leave them in as long as possible…the longer the better. Nevertheless, I got a beautiful beachy wave result.
And now…the moment that you have all been waiting for… the results!
I found the curls keep their shape much better than standard curling methods, so my waves lasted well into the next day (and the next), looking just as good.
I haven’t tried using The Sleep Styler as a “straightening” tool yet, however knowing my hair type and texture I will likely utilize in when I have previously heat straightened my hair and want it to last an extra day. Usually, my hair won’t stay straight overnight, so I am excited to test this option out.
